The beautiful white town of Salobreña, perched on a hill topped by a Moorish castle, rises out of a sea of sugar cane fields and the tropical fruit trees (both important local industries). Tourism here has been managed so that the beach area has few high rise buildings and while other Mediterranean resorts have changed character in response to mass tourism, Salobreña has kept a very Spanish feel (most holidaymakers are from other parts of Spain). You can see this in its several bars and restaurants where you will find good fish and other fresh local ingredients not a tasteless range of international food. Salobreña's busy periods are July and August, Easter Week and over Christmas and New Year. At other times, it is a relatively tranquil place for Spain and you may get the beach to yourself for an early morning stroll. Or, if you have a good legs, you can take a hike through the narrow streets of the old town which climb higgledy-piggledy to the restored Castillo Arabe from which there are wonderful views over the sea, the sugar canes and, inland, up towards the 2,000 m (6,560 ft) heights of the Sierra Nevada national park. All of Southern Spain can be hot at the height of the summer but the rest of the year temperatures can be agreeable. The sun usually shines (but we can't guarantee it) and it is often possible to breakfast outside in January and February. Salobreña has three supermarkets and a range of smaller shops selling most of the items you'll need on holiday. Nearby Motril has more shops and a larger supermarket. There are plenty of interesting places to visit on half-day or whole day trips from Salobreña. In winter, you can even go skiing for a few hours before coming back down to the much more agreeable temperatures at sea level.
